Des’ree – You Gotta Be

HOW?

You gotta be bold, you gotta be cool, you gotta be wiser & talk to your Ophthalmologist. It is important to take care of your eyes just like you take care of your body. As so, the National Eye Institute – NEI – is promoting the Healthy Vision Month & I am here to release your fear while telling you how to protect your eyes and prevent vision loss in the future. This year, the NEI encourage young adults ages 25 to 35 to make eye health a priority now and for years to come.

You gotta be calm & understand that UV rays can cause…

Macular degeneration, resulting from damage to the retina that destroys central. It affects 30% of the population over 70 years of age. Cataract, a clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur vision. An estimated 20% of cases are caused by extended sun’s ultraviolet – UV – exposure, especially UV-B rays. Also, cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries (65-70 thousand/2017). Another UV-related problem is a growth called pterygium. It is a tissue growth over the white part of the surface of the eye that can alter the curve of the eyeball, causing astigmatism or even may block the vision. It is more common in people who work outside in the sun and wind. Besides skin sunburn, long hours at the beach or skiing without proper eye protection can cause corneal sunburn because of UV-B rays. It can be very painful and may cause temporary vision loss.

You gotta be tough & learn how to prevent these problems!

You gotta stay together…All I know, all I know, love will save the day! YES! I am talking about Self Love as it is the key to prioritise our wellness & health.

Remember, sunglasses are not just our cool & fashionable friend to keep our self-esteem sharp, but they also to protect our eyes from the UV rays and help keep our vision healthy.

When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation, filter between 75 and 90% of light, while not promoting any distortion or imperfection, plus having lenses that allow for proper colour recognition. Bonus: add a wide-brimmed hat when you’re out and about for extra protection!

Other everyday tips to challenge what the future holds when it comes to your vision are the following:

Eat eye-healthy foods (as carrots – yup it is true, they are good for your eyes – and salmon, tuna, and halibut), get plenty of physical activity, give your eyes a rest – do you know the 20–20–20 rule? So, throughout the day: every 20 minutes, look away from the screens and focus about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds – and use eye protection at work and at play!

I wear sunglasses now so I can see and experience fully every life cycle in the future!

    1. Querida Joana!

      1. I tried a new treatment for depression/anxiety – transcranial magnetic stimulation but I was one of the 5% that find it too painful. Then my cat died…feeling sad and depressed but will get better.

      2. Hello my dear friend! I believe that you are crossing dificult times, and that is not easy. I am sad to hear that you coulnd’t keep doing your transcranial magnetic stimulation, but I believe that there are always another options & I would say that you should talk to you MD about that. For example, I found a study regarding your case…instead what you did, you can talk with your Medical Doctor about theta burst stimulation (https://www.brainstimjrnl.com/article/S1935-861X(19)30359-6/fulltext) ❤
Besides that life is complex as you know & we always have moments that are not so good. However, there is always a light in the end of the tunel & you are a beautiful light. Believe!

      3. Thank you so much, dear Luis! I will mention the treatment to my doctor but it may not be available under our health insurance. In the meantime, I have added Duloxetine to my daily meds and fingers crossed. 🤞 I so appreciate you, mijo!

    1. Hey Amie ❤
So great to hear your feedback! It is very important to me 🙂

Yes, most people are not aware of how our body reacts in different ambiental conditions/seasons…and so, most of them are not aware of what types of care should have. This is a great example of how fashion, specifically eyewear, can promote health & prevent diseases ❤ Love, Luís ❤
